Trading Journal Template
Minimum-viable journal fields and weekly review prompts. Copy or download.
Per-Trade Fields (the minimum)
- Date / Time — when the trade was opened and closed.
- Pair / Instrument — what you traded.
- Direction — long or short.
- Setup name — the rule you traded (e.g. "London open BOS retest").
- Entry / Stop / Target — exact prices.
- Risk in $ and % — what you were willing to lose.
- Result in R-multiples — +1.5R, -1R, BE, etc.
- Mistake tag — moved stop, early entry, traded outside plan, no mistake.
- Emotion tag — calm, FOMO, tilt, bored, fearful.
- One-sentence note — why you took it, why it worked or didn't.
- Screenshots — entry chart, exit chart.
Weekly Review Prompts
Block 30 minutes every Sunday. Same format every week.
- Total trades this week.
- Win rate, avg R-win, avg R-loss.
- Total R for the week.
- Top 3 mistake tags by frequency.
- Best trade — what worked?
- Worst trade — what was the actual error?
- One specific change for next week. Just one.
Monthly Review Prompts
Last day of the month. Slower, deeper.
- Expectancy across the month.
- Which setup carried the edge?
- Which setup leaked money?
- Are you sticking to risk per trade?
- Did you breach the daily-loss cap? How many times?
- Process score (0-10) — did you follow your plan?
- One process change for next month.

Why journals fail
Journals fail when they are too detailed to maintain or too sparse to be useful. The fields above are the floor — add more only if you'll actually fill them in. The fastest way to abandon a journal is making it a daily 20-minute task. 5 minutes per trade is the right ceiling.
